Life Story

The oldest of Louis and Lena Knittel's six children, Susan, known as Susie, was born on October 11, 1885 in New York City. Her siblings included Margaret, George, Julia, Anna and John.

Susie was the first in her family to marry, marrying Jacob Mohr on June 14, 1903 at the age of 18. She and her husband lived in Brooklyn (at 198 Bleecker Street) where Jacob worked as a barkeeper. A little more than a year later she gave birth to a daughter, Susan, born October 1904. Susie and her husband had no other children, and tragically, Susie died of appendicitis at the age of 22 on July 31, 1908. Her death certificate indicates that she was admitted to the German Hospital which is now known as Wykoff from July 28th until July 31st when she died from peritonitis that resulted from the burst appendix. Susan was buried on August 2nd at the Lutheran All Faiths Cemetery in Middle Village, Queens at location 4096-4098 along with her father-in-law, Jacob, mother-in-law, Mary, brother-in-law Alfred, and sister-in-law Mary. Susan's husband, Jacob, who died almost exactly two years later on July 3, 1910, was buried on July 6 in this plot. Susie and Jacob's daughter was raised by Jacob's younger brother, Alfred and his younger sister, Mary, neither of whom ever married.
