Life Story

Anna Knittel was born in January 1993 to Louis and Lena Knittel but went by the nickname "Nan." She had four older siblings, Susan, Margaret, George and Julia, and one younger brother, John.

According to the 1910 and 1915 census, Nan worked as a saleslady at a department store. On April 16, 1918 she married Jacob Feinauer who was a seaman second class enlisted at the recruiting station in Brooklyn. Jacob was enlisted a day before his 23rd birthday on July 24, 1917 and served for 455 days until November 11, 1918. During his time in service he was on the USS Saratoga and the USS Mercy.

Nan "had class, was artistic and fashionable" according to recollections relayed by her niece Susan Mohr Hagerman to Susan's daughter, Judy. Susan adored her Aunt Nan and was devastated when she died June 23, 1919, just 14 months after her marriage to Jacob. Apparently Anna's marriage was an unhappy one, and Susan had told her daughter she believed that Nan's death was a suicide.
