Life Story
George was the third of six
children born to Louis and Lena Knittel. He was born December 8, 1888
about 18 months after his sister Margaret. He had an older sister Susan
and three younger siblings: Julia, Anna and John.
George lived with his parents in Brooklyn and worked as an "elevator
runner" according to the 1905 Census and an oiler at an ice plant
according to the 1910 Census. By 1917 his occupation as listed on his
WWI draft registration was an assistant engineer at Farmers Trust and
Loan Company. According to his draft registration, George was of medium
height and build with brown hair and brown eyes. He served in the National
Guard in New York from June 24, 1918 to May 28, 1919 when he was honorably
discharged.
After being discharged from the National Guard, George may have received
training to become a police officer. He died on May 6, 1922 at the age
of 33 from a gunshot wound to his back. According to the death certificate,
the bullet pierced his kidney and intestines, resulting in peritonitis.
The death certificate also indicated that his occupation was "Special
Officer," and it is likely that the gunshot wound occurred in the
line of duty. His cousin Lyle was the undertaker who signed the death
certificate. George was the third (or possibly the fourth) of Louis and
Lena's children to die. He was buried at Maple Grove Cemetery in Queens.
