Life Story

The youngest of Louis Knittel and Lena Stern's six children, John was born October 16, 1895 in Brooklyn, New York. John attended school up until eighth grade/age 14 when he became an apprentice for a lithographer in 1910. By 1915 he was a plumber's helper, an occupation he pursued after serving five months as a seaman 2nd class between July 23 to November 11, 1918. He was officially released from duty on April 30, 1919.

John's WWI draft registration card, written June 5, 1917, indicates that he was tall, of medium build with blue eyes and red hair. He listed his occupation as a plumber and worked for W. Brinkman. His WWII draft registration (from April 1942 when he was 47) gives a slightly more detailed physical description: height 5'10", 155 pounds, blue eyes, red hair and bald or balding with ruddy complexion and a tattoo on his left forearm. John died on August 24, 1978 in Malverne, Nassau County, New York and was buried at Long Island National Cemetery in Farmingdale, NY in section 0, site 37450.

John never married and presumably had no children. He lived with his parents and then with his mother after his father died. In 1940 he worked as a plumber for 35 weeks a year and earning $1200. He lived with his mother in a rented house at 767 Madison Street in Brooklyn, the same house where he and his mother lived in 1935.
