Life Story

Julia Anna Knittel, born August 7, 1890, was the fourth of Louis and Lena Knittel's children and the second to marry. In March of 1910 at the age of 19, Julia married Leopold Herr, son of a German immigrant family who had lived on the same block as her family. In 1911 she gave birth to a daughter, Charlotte. Julia, Leo and Charlotte lived together in Brooklyn until at least 1930.

Julia's husband was a collector for the gas company. Their daughter Charlotte was no longer listed with Julia and her husband after the 1930 census and may have married; however, no marriage, residence or death records could be found.

Julia and her husband were still living in Queens in 1940. Leo died in July 1966 according to the Social Security Death Index; however, no death record for Julia could be found.
