Life Story

Rosa Mary Manns, the youngest of Adolph and Elizabeth Manns' five surviving children, was born on February 9 either in 1874 or 1875 in Utica, New York. She had four older sisters, Elizabeth (Lizzie), Josephine, Bertha and Amelia, and one older brother, Adolph, who died at age 17 in 1883. Sometime before 1880, she and her family moved from Utica to Philadelphia where her father worked as a tailor.

Rose must have been close to her Uncle Edward and Aunt Susan in New York as she was listed as one of the sponsors for Rose Cecilia when she was baptized in 1893. In September 1895 when she was 20, she married Edward Thomas Tull who was born and raised in Maryland. An unmarked wedding photo of a young bride with brunette hair and oval face, a groom with blue eyes and mustache and members of the wedding party may be of Rose and Edward. (This is only an educated guess. The photo came from Rose's cousin's daughter to whom Rose was a sponsor and there is a similarity in features of the bride with a photo taken about six years earlier of the youngest of the Manns' daughters.)

Rose and her husband had five children, but only two survived. Their first child, a boy, was either stillborn or died the day of his birth on January 20, 1898. A second son, Edward William was born in 1899 and lived until March 1981. A third son, Thomas, was born premature and died within hours of birth on April 12, 1901. A fourth child and first daughter, named Helen Elizabeth, was born April 3, 1904 but died of bronchial pneumonia at age 2 1/2 on November 17, 1906. Their last child, Howard K, was born on January 11, 1907 and lived to 90 when he died on August 17, 1997.

It is possible that Rosa and Edward had at least a few grandchildren. A census record from 1920 shows that an Edward Tull from Philadelphia, age 21, was married to Elvira Longberg and had a daughter named Evelyn; however later census records showed him being married to Mae Hannah with whom he had no children. It is unclear whether his daughter Evelyn survived. Rosa's son Howard is listed as being separated with dependents on a 1943 WWII registration record, but no record of their names could be located.

Rose died May 4, 1940 of cervical cancer. She was seen by a doctor from October 1939 until the day before she passed away at Sacred Heart Free Home for Incurable Cancer. At the time of her death she was survived by her husband, her two sons, possible some grandchildren and her sisters Amelia and Josephine. She is buried in Mt. Hope Cemetery along with her daughter, Helen, outside of Philadelphia.
