Life Story

The second oldest of Adolph and Elizabeth Mann's children, Josephine was born November 29, 1859 in England. Josephine never married and lived in her parent's home on Wharton Street in Philadelphia along with her sister Amelia until at least 1910. She and her sister are listed as A&J dressmakers in the 1908, 1909 and 1910 city directory. In 1916 and 1918 they are listed as living at 1421 Morris Street and still working as dressmakers.

Josephine outlived all her siblings. Adolph died as a teenager in 1883; Elizabeth, at age 59 in 1916; Bertha, at age 58 in 1927; and Amelia at 72 in 1943. Josephine was the informant on her sister Amelia's death certificate in 1943, however her actual date of death and burial location are not known at this time. No records of her death could be found in the Social Security Death Index or the Pennsylvania Death Index (which ends in 1944). A search of cemetery records at several Philadelphia cemeteries has come up empty; calls will be made to a few additional cemeteries in the hopes of finding a date of death and her final resting place.
