Life Story

Policarp Pappert was born July 5, 1820 to Johannes Adam Pappert and Anna Margaretha Raab in Dipperez, a small Catholic parish town eight kilometers east of Fulda. His godfather, possibly an uncle, was Josephus Raab of Wissels. He married Josepha Scheling of Fulda on October 10, 1854 in the Cathedral of Fulda. A civil ceremony was held on October 2 in Cassel. Policarp was an Obergendarm--chief police officer--in the town of Neukirchen, and he later retired from the military to become a district messenger in Fulda. He moved the family to Fulda where his son attended high school sometime in the 1870's.

Policarp and Josepha had at least three children: Martin, who was likely the oldest as he is named after Josepha's father, Kathinka, and Valentin. He gave his son Valentin permission to go to the United States in June 1881, and Valentin left July 2 of that year. His daughter Kathinka moved to Frankfurt and it is not known whether she married. Policarp died at the age of 67 on June 20, 1887 in Fulda. His cause of death and burial location is not known at this time. He is likely buried either in Dipperez where he was born or in Fulda where he died.
