Life Story

Kathinka Pappert was likely the second of three children born to Josepha Scheling and Polycarp Pappert. She was born sometime between 1857 and 1862. She had an older brother Martin and a younger brother Valentin. No birth, marriage or death records could be found for Kathinka and little is known of her other than that she lived as a boarder with a family in Frankfurt at the turn of the century. A portion of a letter she wrote to her brother Valentin who had immigrated to New York shows her affection for her younger brother and perhaps some annoyance with her older brother. The letter reads in part,

Dear Valentin, Do not write me ever again of what I have written you about Martin. You also know the brute. I hope that you will write to me again soon. It is not long until the 14th of February when Valentine's Day will be celebrated, and so I must send you wishes at this time for much happiness on your blessed name-day, and I wish for good fortune and blessings for you and your family. I do not know if you celebrate your name-day, but I suspect that you do. Now I will close for today with the hope that you will answer my letter. Included are heartfelt greetings to my sister-in-law and to the little ones, and to you I remain your ever-loving sister and sister-in-law.
