Life Story

Agata Suchnat was born in Swidicze, Byelorussia in 1891. Her father was a tenant (peasant) farmer on the Rymaszewski estate and, when Agata was a teenager, she began working as a maid in the Rymaszewski's manor house. The second born son, Josef Rymaszewski, fell in love with her, which was not not considered appropriate due to her father's status, so they ran away to America in 1913. Their ship was the Caledonia (out of Glasgow) and arrived in New York on June 8, 1913.

Once in America, they settled in North River, New York as they knew some people there (who may have been related to Agata). They arrived in North Creek, NY at the train station and the person who was supposed to pick them up did not arrive. Joe wanted to go find him, but Agata was so scared of the new country that she wouldn't leave the train platform. They stayed there overnight and their ride arrived the next day. Joe became a garnet miner and Agata worked as a housemaid their boarding house, located at 13th Lake Road in either the first or last house on the street. The boarding house was filled with about 35 other lodgers, who werr also garnet miners and almost all Russian immigrants themselves. Only one other woman lived there besides Agata. She became pregnant the following year, which prompted Joe and Agata to get married by a justice of the peace on July 8, 1914 in North Creek, New York. Their first child, Adam, was born on October 31, 1914. A second child, Joseph ("Joey") was born in 1918 in North Creek, also.

Agata was a Roman Catholic, 5 foot 2 inches tall and 110 pounds.

Sadly, Agata died March 18, 1917 in Glens Falls Hospital in North Creek, New York. She was only 26 years old and the cause of death was septi thromi and a pumonary embolism. She is buried in North Creek, NY in St. James Cemetary.

Ellis Island records list her as Agafia Suenat and her death certificate spells her maiden name as Sygnat.
