Life Story

Sarah Boyle--called Dollie by those who knew her--was the second of three daughters born to Sarah and Patrick Burke. She was born on October 20, 1872; her older sister, Elizabeth, was born in January 1870, and a younger sister, Ellen, was born in January 1874 but died in 1881.

Dollie grew up in New York City. She married Alexander Knittel on October 12, 1891 and had three children: Louis Lyle (called Lyle) who was born September 13, 1893; Grace Anna, who was born in November 1897 and died July 1898; and Ruth Frances, who was born December 5, 1911. After her marriage, Dollie remained a homemaker caring for her family. On many occasions she would make dinner for Alex and other police officers and she often visited him at the Bronx Precinct while he was on duty as his schedule would keep him there for extended periods of time. She and Alex were both socially active with the Masonic League, even taking their young daughter Ruth to many of the social events. She was very close with her sister Lillie, who often made formal dresses for Dollie's daughter, Ruth.
