Life Story

Ferdinand Walder was born.....

My great-great-grandfather was Ferdinand Walder's elder brother, Frederic. My great-grandfather, Paul, came to stay with Ferdinand and Julia when he emigrated here. They were his sponsors. From what I've gathered from old letters from Frederic to Paul, he lived in their attic/upstairs apartment, where it was very hot, and he had to pay to cross the bridge from Brooklyn to Manhattan where he worked and was not happy about that. This dissatisfaction led him to seek different lodgings, in Manhattan, where he would end up boarding with the woman who would eventually be his mother-in-law.

2014 Chris Timm to Jill - According to Hombrechtikon, Zurich, records, Ferdinand Walder was born 7 Sep 1856. He immigrated in the early 1880s, probably 1882. I believe Rosie once said that she'd thought he had gone to Wisconsin first. His parents were Heinrich Walder and Magdalena Guyer. The latter died young and the former lived to be at least 88, possibly 90. He may have been a town official of some sort. Ferdinand had two full siblings, Anna Walder Buehler and Rudolf Friedrich, and three half-siblings, Anna Maria, Heinrich Eduard, and Reinhold.

Ferdinand is in Manhattan by at least 1893, and Brooklyn by at least 1898. He died 22 Oct 1929. According to the 1900 census, Julia had 4 children with 2 surviving. Apparently Ferdinand and Julia were buried in St. John's cemetery, Middle Village, NY.
